Okay,I enjoyed the movie overall and there are so many good reviews written on IMDb that I will just get to the part that almost made it unbearable to sit through. the music soundtrack! How would I describe it? Horrible, annoying, 70"s meets 80"s with a dash of porn? I"m sitting in the theater and wishing Mike Tyson would show up to chew my ears off! Does that explain it well enough? I get that they may have been going for a certain mood or feel, but they could have done away with 90% of that music and improved the movie a lot.
The acting was very good and the plot was well thought out and done. I just wish the movie was made a bit more to modern standards or technique I guess.

A darken screen. An audible cough. And then the film builds from there, just as its deadly disease that will claim plenty of innocent victims by the closing credits. Contagion is a hypochondriac "s nightmare, a paranoid thriller that chronicles the birth of a virus and the death of many of its hosts, meaning us.
First we meet patient zero ( Gwyneth Paltrow, in a small but pivotal role. already contaminated and showing alarming symptoms as she begins to infect the worldwide population. As with all airborne viruses, they start off small and so does our story. In fact, Mr. Bourne, a.k.a. Matt Damon, is front and center to provide the human factor as loving husband and father who tries to protect his family from the apocalyptic slaughter. His supporting role is worthy of an Oscar nomination. br> Meanwhile, more and more civilians are touched by the microbes as they go about their everyday lives. The death count multiplies and so does the structure of the film as it introduces several governmental agencies, administrators ( Laurence Fishburne, Kate Winslet. and doctors ( Marion Cotillard, Jennifer Erhe, Elliott Gould. all valiantly searching for the cause and the cure of this pandemic outbreak. Even a blogger (Jude Law) jumps into the fray casting blame and promoting fear and conspiracy theories galore.
Director Steven Soderberg, who recently stated that he was retiring as a film director to devote his time to a full time painting career, continues to use the same format he has done before in other films, such as his highly successful Traffic and his sub-par Full Frontal: incorporating multiple story lines that parallel and complete the larger issue at hand. It works here. The director effectively downplays the horror and gore ( minus one autopsy scene not for the squeamish ) and he subtly intensifies the dilemma with his quieter, more personal scenes involving Damon and family as this rapid progress of lethal bacteria reaches epidemic widespread proportions. He deals directly with the larger scope of the epidemic seen in many continents while interweaving moments of intense emotion, such as Erhe"s tearful goodbye to her father.
Yet with its all star cast, Contagion loses some its its gritty documentary status. While all are capable and accomplished actors, their individual screen personas outweigh the reality of the situations and their characters. Perhaps it does help to sell a serious minded movie with a grisly subject by having its star-studded roster aboard, but it also creates a perpetual feeling that removes the harsh dose of reality and the complexity of this morbid issue from the equation. Paltrow. Law, Winslet, Fishburne, and Cotillard are not ordinary folks like us which somewhat diminishes the power of the tale, while unknown actors would have made more impact to the movie audience and the catastrophe that literally plagues mankind.
Still, the actors supply their craft well and the film has its share of terrifying moments and imagery from the masterful vision of its director: A child"s hand print left routinely on a metal door. A stranger coughing in a crowded elevator. Quarantined cities with armored checkpoints containing its population within the city limits. Empty deserted airports and garbage strewn streets that were once bustling. Colorful body bags lined in deep trenches for make-shift mass graves. A dead child staring lifelessly into the camera. The film doesn"t soft-pedal the utmost gravity of the problem.
The solid screenplay by Scott Z. Burns takes a grim situation and looks at all the ramifications very clinically and most efficiently, although some scenes that provide exposition to the medical terms of the biohazards and disease-giving microorganisms become too preachy and talky. The percussion-filled music score by Cliff Martinez adds the needed tension, and the film editing by Stephen Mirrone is taut and concise.
Contagion cleverly uses our insecurities and pathological fear of contamination and helplessness most efficiently. That is perhaps its chief asset as it renders a world gone mad in frightening clarity. The film sends its fatalistic and isolationist message loudly and clearly. Contagion is a rarity these days, a well-made, thought provoking adult drama. It is certainly one of the better films this year ( which may not sound like much praise with this summer"s sub-par assortment. but its realistic depiction of a possible viral holocaust is riveting and exciting filmmaking.
So be careful with whom you choose to share your life. Watch out for germ-encrusted food samples. Avoid any sneezes in small quarters or friendly outstretched hands. And while we"re at it, may I please borrow some Purell? GRADE: B+
